Scentsational Memories!

With summer on it’s way the air is filled with sweet smells of honeysuckle & freshly cut grass.  I smelled this honeysuckle as I was walking today & was flooded with wonderful summertime memories.

There is a reason for this.  Scent, memory & emotion are related positionally in the brain which helps explain the sensations that are triggered from particular smells.  The more often a smell & emotion are related the stronger this reaction can be.  It’s interesting to know that people who have damage to their memory often lose their sense of smell.

What smells trigger wonderful memories for you?  Intentionally surround yourself with these smells from time to time for a blast to the past.

  1. Okay, so this isn’t about flowers or baking, but it’s a scent memory that links to a place and time. In the past (don’t smell it much these days) I’d get a whiff of diesel fuel (yep, you read that correctly) and it would transport me to Paris. I’ve read that we have our sense of smell before our sight and hearing develop. Seems like it would be that way, doesn’t it?
